Reita Faria - The first Indian woman to win an international beauty contest.
The first Indian woman to win an international beauty contest, Reita Faria has served as a trailblazer for many other Indian beauty queens. She won the Miss World crown in 1966. Originally hailing from Matunga in Mumbai, she did her schooling and college education in Mumbai. She had bagged the Miss Mumbai and Miss India titles during her medical studies at the Grant College, Mumbai.
However, after her one-year tenure, she did not do any further modeling, choosing to pursue a career in medicine. She went on to complete her medical studies from the King's College Hospital Medical School, London. She entered into wedlock with Dr. David Powell, whom she met at the King's College. Before they tied the knot, they lived and worked together in Boston for a few years, before returning to Ireland. A Mumbai producer offered her a film when she was just 17 years, but her mother had opposed it.
She has settled down in Dublin, Ireland since 1973.
